had median annual earnings exceeding $1508, the median for all men
in the industry. Women’s annual median earnings were low in the
seamless hosiery industry, in no occupational group reaching the $1000
mark. The lowest median reported, $617, was for women employed as
examiners, the highest, $995 was for women in the string knitting de-
partment (Chart 12).
Median annual earnings by geographical district
Median annual earnings for men in the full-fashioned hosiery in-
dustry reached the $2000 mark only in the Philadelphia area where the
median was $2666. Women in Berks county had the highest median
earnings, $1265. In no other area did their median earnings equal
$1200. In the seamless hosiery industry median annual earnings were
highest for both men and women in the Philadelphia area (Chart 13).
Median annual earnings by individual plant
Median annual earnings for men in the various plants ranged from
$1363 to mearly $3500. In only six plants, five of which were full-
fashioned hosiery plants, were men’s median earnings as much as
$2000. There was no plant in which the median annual earnings for
women equalled $1500; in more than one-half of the plants women’s
median annual earnings were between $750 and $1000. In eight full-
Fashioned hosiery plants women’s median annual earnings were over
$1000 (Table 18).
