plants working 48 hours or less. Exactly one-half of the women in the
full-fashioned hosiery industry worked 48 hours or less as compared to

So
Weekly hours by geographical district
The actual hours of work varied so greatly in each geographical dis-
trict that median weekly hours were computed to form a basis of
comparison. In the full-fashioned industry both men and women in
Berks County had the longest median hours of work. The median
hours were shortest for men in Philadelphia County. Women employed
in Philadelphia and Northampton Counties had the shortest median
hours of work. As a result of slack work in the seamless hosiery in-
dustry, median hours tended to be short for both men and women in
all areas (Table 12).
Weekly hours by individual plant
There was a wide range in the median hours of work for men and
women in the various hosiery plants. The median hours for men
varied from 43 to 56 hours a week in the full-fashioned hosiery plants,
and from 44 to 50 hours in the seamless hosiery plants. Median weekly
hours for women ranged from 34 to 53 hours a week in full-fashioned
hosiery plants and from 28 to 48 hours a week in seamless hosiery
plants (Appendix Table IV).
