THE STORY OF ARTIFICIAL SILK The value of sunlight on the body was known by the Greeks, Romans and Egyptians. Herodotus mentions it. All the Roman Emperors had sun-baths as well as water- baths. But for 2,000 years the value of sunlight as a creator of health and strength has been forgotten. The incredibly stupid and immoral doctrine has been taught that the body is an unclean thing that must be covered up. All of us, in Europe and America at least, are still under the dark blight of this preposterous delusion. The effect of the Ultra-Violet rays on the skin is now accurately known. They stimu- late the sweat-glands. They dilate the capil- laries. They relieve the congestion. They increase the Vitamin D of the body—the bone-making element. They keep the skin active. They increase the power of resistance to infection. They reach the blood and increase the number of red corpuscles, so that it can the more easily destroy the germs of disease. They thus destroy bacteria within the body. They increase the amount of lodine and iron and phosphorus in the body. They make high-quality blood, which is the main thing in health.
