Besides the cultivation of these cereals, which are the chief crops, a conside- 
rable area is devoted to the growth of spelt millet, buckwheat, rice etc. 
The largest areas of maize are in the departments of Belgrade, Batka and 
Srem and of wheat in the Belgrade, Backa and Osek departments. The wheat in 
‘hese parts is excellent in quality, containing a high proportion of protein, and 
2njoys a European reputation under the name of , Tissa’” wheat. 
The pod plant which gives the largest export is the haricot bean. In 1925 
35.745 hectares were sown with haricots and gave a yield of 379.213 met. cwts, 
or 10.22 met. cwts per hectare. In addition there was a crop of 535.409 met cwts 
of haricots grown as a secondary crop. In the same year 262.578 met. cwts of haricot 
beans were exported. 
The most important root crop is the potato. In 1925 233.306 hectares were 
sown and gave a yield of 12,237.774 met. cwts or 53.08 per hectare. The yield 
of potatoes grown as a secondary crop was 120.776 met. cwts. In 1925, 65.137 
met, cwts of potatoes were exported.

industrial plants grown in the country in 1925.

Hemp is mostly grown in Backa (Novi Sad, 52.49, of the total output) and 
also in the valley of the Morava (Vranje, Leskovac). Sugar beet is grown mostly 
in the Belgrade, Batka, Srem and Osek departments. The better kinds of tobacco 
are produced in Herzegovina and South Serbia. Hops are cultivated chiefly in 
Badka (Novi Sad).
