As the Messageries Maritime Company supply a regular direct service to France, the
bulk of the produce of the Islands is now shipped direct to Europe. Except for the importation
nf aiich articles as Sour and sucar. trade with Australia has decreased considerably.
NorroLK IsLAND.
Norfolk Island is situated about 900 miles north-east of Sydney ; it is about five miles long
and three miles wide—the total area being 8,500 acres. This Island was taken over from the
State of New South Wales and became a Territory of the Commonwealth in 1914. The population
on 31st December, 1925, numbered 747. The imports for 1924-25 were valued at £17.190 and
axports. chiefly sub-tropical fruits. £3.900.
Lorp Howe IsrLaND.
Lord Howe Island is situated about 400 miles north-east of Sydney, and has a population
of less than 200. The island is about seven miles long and about one mile wide, with an area of
3,220 acres. Politically, it is part of New South Wales. The principal export from this Island
is the kentia palm seed. of which product the island has practically a world’s monopoly,
