THE STORY OF ARTIFICIAL SILK

Silk, but eventually a new type of loom will
be invented—one which is not a makeshift.
An ideal loom for Artificial Silk would be
quite different from an ordinary cotton or
worsted goods loom.

This new yarn is compelling the cotton,
woollen and linen men to overhaul their
machinery and improve their methods. If
it had done nothing else, this alone would be
a great achievement.

They were forced by outside pressure to
reorganizé and improve their methods and
their machines. When the Lancashire mill
girls began to wear Artificial Silk jumpers
and stockings, the cotton men learned that
Artificial Silk bad to be taken seriously. It
ceased to be a joke.

There are now 1,200 textile manufacturers
in Lancashire who are using Artificial Silk
in some form or other, mostly in the making
of shirtings, linings and fancy dress goods.
They are combining it with mercerized cotton
very successfully. They are finding that it
is enabling them to win back their foreign
trade. :
