To the standard return shown in this table there should be .
added, as already noted, the return on new investment made in a
the railway properties during the years 1918 and 1919. This, , ou
investment was in the neighborhood of $1,200,000,000, but itis" 7
difficult to apportion the return on the amount to the various >
railways, or to divide it between the two years of the period.
Hence no attempt is here made to state the total amount by
which the government guarantee for 1919 was greater than--
the standard return, or to distribute such amount among the
individual companies. Pending claims for special compensa-
tion in excess of the standard return have not been included
in the statistics. The entries of the first column of the table
will be increased to the extent that such claims may be allowed,
while the third and fourth columns will be affected cor-
respondingly.
