NE hundred and fifty Canadian cities re
ported a gross gain* of 290 plants em-
ploying 15,357 people, during the years
1926 and 1927. These plants included newly
organized companies, branch plants, and reloca-
“ions.
The table above details the distribution of
‘hese gains among the various Provinces.
* The term “‘gross gains” is used for the reason that a con-
siderable part of the relocations consist of firms moving
from one point to another within the same province. This
ntra-province movement while representing a gain to
ipecific cities of a certain province does not, of course,
represent a net gain to the Dominion. As a part of the
total gain, however, these intra-province relocations were
-elatively unimportant.
Twenty-two firms employing 1,460 people
went out of business or moved outside of
Canada during this same period, representing
the net loss to Canada.
The average size of plant gained in Canada
was 53 employees which compares with an
average of 36 employees for the United States.
Plants gained by cities located in the Province
of Quebec averaged 87 people, in Ontario 61,
in Saskatchewan 35, in Alberta 27, in British
Columbia 24 and in Manitoba 23.
Of the 197 new local plants, 14 employed
100 or more persons. Four of these were pulp
or paper mills, and the others were distributed
The table below and those on pages 114 and 115 show the distri-
bution of plants by provinces and cities classified according to size.
