Further good rains in India have caused a distinctly harder tone 
to prevail in the Silver Market, and although the effect on prices has 
been very small so far, to-day’s quotation, 24 3 /j e d. is */s d. higher than 
when we wrote last week, and is the highest quoted for nearly a 
month. 
Surprise has been expressed in some quarters that quotations 
have failed to respond more sharply to the much improved crop pro- 
spects. It must be remembered however that when the reports were 
most unfavourable, the fall in quotations was small, because many 
operators realised that there was still time for the Situation to be sa- 
ved. It is also an undoubted fact that the large stock both here and 
in Bombay discourages fresh purchases for a rise unless operators can 
see their way very clearly, 
With China a fairly constant buyer, and no encouragement to 
bears, there seems ground for anticipating some further slight impro- 
vement in quotations. 
GOLD: — 
There is no Continental demand for Bar Gold and the require- 
raents of India are very small so practically the whole of this week's 
arrival is being taken to the Bank of England where £ 764,000 in Bars 
and Coin has been received. Düring the week £ 730,000 in Sovereigns 
has been withdrawn for South America and £200,000 for Constanlinoplc.
