ANTWERP.
(From United States Consul-General Howe, Antwerp, Belgium.)
Merchants who in former years dealt in macaroni wheat have
entirely abandoned this branch of their business, owing to the fact
that they could not compete with the French importations of the
African-grown product, which is admitted free of duty. In the
opinion of one of the largest grain merchants of Antwerp it would
be difficult to dispose of 2,000 bags of macaroni wheat on this market
unless the product could be sold at a price considerably under
that of ordinary wheat, to be used by the millers for the purpose of
giving additional strength to the flour which they produce from
ordinary wheat.
