Practically all the wheat imported into Denmark comes from
the United States and Russia. A considerable amount grown in the
United States is imported through Hamburg, while much that comes
from Russia is brought through Germany. The following table
shows the amount of wheat imported into Denmark during the years
1901 and 1902:

WHEAT PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION,

From statistics at present obtainable it seems that 126,000,000
hectoliters (357,588,000 bushels) would be a conservative estimate
for this year's wheat harvest in France. This gives an average production
of 19.3 hectoliters (34.773 bushels) per hectare (2.471 acres),
as 6,500,000 hectares (16,061,500 acres) were sown.
In 1902 there were sown 6,800,000 hectares (16,802,800 acres); if
for this year the acr sage had been the same as in 1902, the crop
would have yielded 131,000,000 hectoliters (371,778,000 bushels), an
amount exceeded only once, in 1874, when 133,000,000 hectoliters
(377,454,000 bushels) were harvested.
The average annual consumption of wheat in France (including
that necessary for planting and industry) being 123,000,000 hectoliters
(349,074,000 bushels), one would imagine that foreign wheat
had little chance for entry. It is very probable that to the 126,000,-ooo
hectoliters (357,588,000 bushels) estimated for France, Algeria
and Tunis will add 2,000,000 hectoliters (5,676,000 bushels) more,
which will enter free, It may be added, however, that, as last year,
the quality of the harvest is not so good as the average.

FOREIGN HARD WHEATS IN FRANCE.

French millers contend that French wheat does not contain sufficient
gluten (azotic matter), and that a foreign mixture of 15 to 30
