MACARONI WHEAT IN FOREIGN MARKETS.

All these manufacturers have been informed of the estimated surplus
of 10,000,000 bushels of macaroni wheat in the United States
available for export, and have been invited to send in a statement
of their requirements for the coming year, but thus far no response
has been received, for the reason that consumers of macaroni wheat
in this district are not importers and prefer to continue their practice
of purchasing supplies from grain dealers at the nearest seaport.
It is therefore the grain importers at Hamburg, Bremen, and
Mannheim, rather than the individual consumers throughout Germany,
who will be directly interested in the subject.
Macaroni wheat is sold in Germany by the metric ton of 2,204
pounds, and the present prices are about 150 marks ($35.70) per
ton at Berlin and ro3 to rio marks ($24.99 to $26.18) per ton at
Hamburg.

BERLIN, GERMANY, October 28, 1903. Consul-General.

BREMEN.

(From United States ( onsul Diederich, Bren Germany.)

No market can be found in this consular district for American
macaroni wheat, as no macaroni is manufactured here or anywhere
in northern Germany. As is well known, all macaroni-eating people
live in southern countries—in France, Austria, and Italy.
I consulted a number of the leading German grain importers and
to them even the term ‘‘macaroni wheat” was entirely unknown,
which goes to show that the article is not handled in this market.
Henry W. DIEDERICH, Consul.
BREMEN, GERMANY, October 20, 1903.

BRUNSWICK.

(From United States Consul Albert, Bruns any.)

The term ‘‘macaroni wheat” (in German ‘“ Makaroniweizen )
is not known to the trade in Germany.
Macaroni is known here as noodle. In the manufacture of noodle
only hard wheat is used, and this sort does not grow in Germany;
there would therefore be no prejudice to be overcome in the introduction
of the American macaroni wheat. The prospect for the
successful export of such wheat would depend upon the price at

which it can be delivered in Germany.
