In this connection, however, I deem it proper to call attention to
the fact that, from information received at the Ministry of Agriculture
at Rome, the wheat production for this year in Italy is estimated
at 184,166,666 bushels, against 136,000,000 bushels for 19oz2,
being 19,833,333 bushels more than the average annual production,
which is estimated at 164,333,333 bushels.
As before stated, the principal market from which the city of
Palermo buys a large supply of wheat is Odessa, where the price is
almost always lower than those obtaining at the other principal
Wheat markets of the world, with the exception sometimes of that
of Chicago.
To say nothing in regard to other markets, I wish only to men;
tion the prices of wheat which prevailed in our two principal
Markets—New York and Chicago—on certain dates of the past few
months, in comparison with the prices at Odessa, the only large
wheat market from which we have to fear permanent competition,
on account of its geographical position, in respect to the consuming
markets of Euro

The difference in prices between the New York and the Chicago
Markets may be caused by the freight expenses from Chicago to
New York, so that we should compare the Odessa market with that
of New York, the nearest port to Europe.
