resulted in an almost total loss, much American grain found ready
sale in Spain at an immense profit. The duty was temporarily
removed and at that time several ships loaded exclusively with
American wheat entered this port.
While the crop this year has resulted in partial failure, owing to
lack of rain, the leading dealers assure me that unless prices were
low enough to compete with adjacent European countries the chances
of selling American wheat in southern Spain are poor.

SWEDEN AND NORWAY.
NORWAY.

(From United States Consul-General Bordewich, Christiania, Norway.)

The value of the import of macaroni into Norway in the year
1g9oz amounted to only $6,000. There is but one macaroni factory
in Norway, and its output is insignificant. The article comes mainly
from Mediterranean ports, but some also from Germany.
The import of grain from the United States is declining, while
that of flour is increasing. The fact is, Norway has but a couple of
up-to-date flour mills suited only for ordinary wheat grinding, and
if the macaroni wheat, owing to its extraordinary hardness, requires
special machinery for its manufacture into flour, Norway will not be
likely to be the country to adopt the methods necessary for the
proper utilization of the new wheat.
In the year 19o2z Norway imported from the United States wheat
flour valued at $346,200, while of wheat none arrived.
For the guidance of prospective shippers it may be stated that the
duty levied on wheat flour is 2 kroner (54 cents) per 100 kilograms
(220.46 pounds), and on wheat 60 gre (16 cents) per 1oo kilograms.

Consul-General.
CHRISTIANIA, NORWAY, October 23, 1903.

(From United States Consul Cunningham, Bergen, Norway.)

There does not seem to be much prospect for the sale of any of
America’s surplus of macaroni wheat in Norway. The wheat suitable
for the manufacture of macaroni is scarcely known to the mills
of this country, and the demand for this wheat or its manufactured
products is very small indeed.
The whole wheat importation of all Rin in the year 1902
amounted to but 239,617 pounds. The importation of wheat flour
