MACARONI WHEAT IN FOREIGN MARKETS.

per too kilograms (220 pounds), but as macaroni wheat must be
ground in special mills the flour only is imported.
The macaroni manufacturers in Sweden are the following firms:
Max Bartsch and Gegerfelt & Weiling, of Gothenburg.
Stockholms Maccaronifabrik, of Stockholm.
Lundquists Fabriker, of Malmo.
Aktiebolaget Norrkspings Makaronifabrik, of Norrkdping.
These manufacturers do not import the flour themselves, but buy
through agents or importing merchants.
The following Gothenburg firms would like to correspond with
American exporters of macaroni flour: Carl Lindquists Aktiebolag
and Broderna Linquist. RoBeERT S. S. BERGH, Consul.
GOTHENBURG, SWEDEN, Oclober 21, 1903. :

SWITZERLAND.
(From United States Consul Peters, St. Gall, Switzerland.)

There are no mills in this consular district, nor in any part of
Switzerland, at which this particular kind of meal (groats) is made.
No such wheat has therefore been imported up to the present, nor
will there be in the near future. There are in this consular district,
however, several small establishments manufacturing macaroni, etc.,
but they import the groats from Marseilles, France, and Ludwigshafen,
Germany, where large mills for the manufacture of groats are
established.
The manufacturers are quite willing to buy the groats from Swiss
mills, and only cover their demand from abroad because they are
unable to do so in the country. It will thus be seen that mills must
be established for the manufacture of groats before the wheat is exported
for this purpose to Switzerland. The Swiss duty on macaroni
meal is 39 cents per 220 pounds.
Switzerland is not nearly able to supply its own markets with
macaroni, large quantities being imported from Italy.
Tuaomas WILLING PETERS, Consul.
St. GALL, SWITZERLAND, October 15, 1903.

BASEL.
(From United States Consul Gifford, Basel, Switzerland.)

As there are no grits mills in this district, comprising, besides the
city of Basel, only the Cantons of Basel Land and Soleure, it is probable
that little or no opportunity would be found here for the sale
of American macaroni wheat.
