THE TURN-ROUND OF A SHIP IN PORT 5

The general account of the cargo contained in the
master’s declaration has to be supplemented by special
declarations, or Entries as they are termed, made by,
or on behalf of, each importer who receives a consignment
of goods. The Entries must be completed within fourteen
days from the date of the vessel's arrival.

STEVEDORING

The vessel now proceeds to unload. For the discharge
of cargo the services of stevedores are generally requisi-
tioned, though the work may be done by, or under the
supervision of, the port authority. Stevedores are con-
tractors who employ gangs of “ dockers,” or dock labourers,
to handle goods between ship and shore. At appropriated
berths general cargo is discharged under Customs surveil-
lance into transit sheds at the quayside for the purpose of
sorting to marks and numbers. Goods may be landed and
deposited in approved transit sheds prior to “entry” or
report, or, in the case of incomplete information, discharg-
ing operations may proceed on the basis of an ““ imperfect
entry.”

From the quayside shed, the discharged merchandise
is conveyed to its further or final destination by rail, road,
or water. Accordingly, use will be made of the railway
tracks and roadways alongside the discharging berths.
For water transport, fleets of barges and lighters will be at
hand as required. Goods which do not stand in need of
sorting and classification in the transit shed may be
dispatched direct by delivery into railway truck on the
quay, or overside into barge.

LOADING OPERATIONS

When the unloading is completed, or even prior thereto,
if a hatchway becomes available for the purpose, and the
goods are ready at hand, the operation of loading will
commence. Sometimes, however, in order to leave
adequate space for the handling of an incoming cargo,
