PORT SERVICES AS REGARDS SHIPPING 55
not let out their dry docks. They contract for the repair
work to a ship, and the hire of the graving dock is included
in the amount of the tender, or in the rates paid for the
work done. On the other hand, a port authority rarely, if
ever, undertakes repair work to ships, and simply lets out
its dry docks for a period of occupancy, during which
repairs can be carried on by outside operation.

GENERAL EQUIPMENT

Other services rendered by port authorities to shipping
are of a general character. Supplies of light and power
(electric, pneumatic, steam and water under pressure)
must normally be available. The furnishing of fresh
water to ships’ tanks, and the disposal of engine ashes and
refuse from galleys are services of a domestic and sanitary
nature, which are none the less essential while a ship is in
port. The quays and roads must be kept scavenged and
well lighted and in good repair. The fumigation of holds
is sometimes done with the assistance of port officials.
