TECHNIQUE OF THE FIVE-DAY WEEK 29

in which the workers are closely organized in labor unions,
a longer than 40-hour work schedule is frequently found in
connection with the five-day week. It appears to be quite
as common a practice, if not to retain the same number of
hours in the week as formerly, to reduce them only slightly
and to distribute the total work hours over five days in the
manner which would work out most satisfactorily in each
individual case.
Table 6 presents an analysis of the changes in work hours
per week in 219 of the 270 establishments that have introduced
the five-day week. Thirty-six companies reported
that the five-day week had been in effect in their establishments
since they had been in business, and these, with
fifteen others that did not report their hours of work, have
been omitted from the tabulation.
