WHAT IS WILL-POWER?

S far as I can learn, there is no such

A thing as a ‘“ will” in the human brain.
4 . The brain is governed always by some
group of desires or fears or hopes or memories
or ideas. When we make a decision, we call it
using our ‘‘ will-power.”” It is a mere phrase.
We say that a man is strong-willed. This
only means that some group of desires or
hopes or ideas is ruling his brain. Or we say
that he is weak-willed. This only means that
some group of fears is ruling his brain.

If a weak-willed man is in a burning theatre,
he will trample on women and children to get
out. His fears will drive him to madness. Or
he will commit suicide if he suddenly faces a
danger. He has will-power enough, but it is
not the right kind to enable him to succeed in
ife.
