WHAT IS WILL-POWER?

build them into a Plan and a Purpose—that is
what must be done if a man wants a strong
‘“ will-power ”’ that will send him forward from
one success to another.
We create our ‘‘ will-power >’ by Learning
and Doing. And every man has precisely the
‘“ will-power ’ that he deserves. A man may
be governed by his fears, his appetites, his
knowledge, his feelings or his ambition. The
will is the strongest group of cells in his brain,
plus courage. It is nothing in itself. It is what
2 man OBEYS.
No one is born weak-willed, but many
people are born timid. They put the blame for
their inaction on their will-power, and they
are mistaken. What they need is to get rid of
their fears.
When we say the ‘‘ will,” we mean the
brain in action. We do not mean that there is
any separate faculty in the brain. No surgeon
can open a man’s skull and take his will out.

When a man is, as we say, weak-willed, he
may be too timid to act, or he may be equally
interested in several opposite things, or he
may be interested only in amusement or
trifling affairs.
