born timid. He acquired his courage by
forcing himself to face dangers that frightened
him.
Courage can be created by will-power ;
and will-power, as we have seen in the previous
chapter, can be strengthened and moulded by
the development of a Purpose.
In practical business life, courage can be
developed by preferring the hard jobs. Any
young man who asks for a harder job instead
of an easy one, will soon step ahead of the
crowd.
A certain Londoner, who is now high up
among financiers, once accepted a very difficult
job in place of a fairly easy one. He was asked
why he had made the change, and he gave a
good answer. He replied : ‘‘ It is a man’s job,
and I am keen to have a shot at it.”
The vast mass of people prefer the easy
jobs. They shrink back from risk and responsi-
bility. Either they play or they do as they are
told, and that is their whole life—playing and
obeying.
Inevitably, they remain as much alike as
peas in a pod or blades of grass in a field.
They do not develop either will-power or
courage. Their slogan is—the most money
