In business life, a man must have Initiative
—the power to start something new, and he
must have Tenacity as well—the power to
keep on in spite of difficulties. Many men,
mostly of the dreamer type, are quick to start
something new, but when they encounter
difficulties and criticism, they weaken. They
are afraid of threats or opposition. They are
often very clever men, but they lack the will-
power and courage to keep on.
They expect applause when they start
something new. Instead of applause they are
pelted with criticism. As soon as a man begins
to move strongly in any direction, the crowd
blocks him. It does not open a path for him
and cheer him on. That 1s why Tenacity is
even more important than Initiative. It enables
a man to finish what he begins.
To-day people are paying immense prices
for the first editions of books by Joseph Conrad.
