WILL-POWER IN BUSINESS

downwards at forty-five he will never recover.”
It comes to this—that most men are afraid of
responsibility and the hard work that a man
must do to be a leader. We are held back by
inertia, by laziness and by fear. Once a man
gets rid of these three drawbacks, up he goes to
““ the seats of the mighty.” When a man
appears who has energy and a love of hard
work and courage and the joy of life, the world
is his oyster.
Another reason why we have so few leaders
is because we have so many useless organiza-
tions. Instead of doing our own thinking and
acting, we join an organization and pay dues,
or we allow a government department to
control us.
To begin with, the Government has eighty
departments. Very likely, sixty of these are not
only useless, but troublesome and destructive.
There are 3,000 trade organizations—how
many are of any value, except to the officials
who consume the dues ? Are there fifty trade
organizations that are rendering a real practical
service to their members ? Probably not.
There are 2,500 trade unions—how many
are run to benefit the members, and how many
are run to make a career for Labour Leaders ?
