THE NEED OF NEW LEADERS

There are hundreds of Conservative associa-
tions and Liberal associations and Socialist
associations—all absolutely useless for any
practical purpose.
There are leagues, societies, associations,
congresses—hundreds of them. There is not
one to promote National Efficiency, but we
have every other sort—to protect aborigines,
to send old clothes to natives in central Africa,
and so on.
This whole nation is plagued and impover-
ished by a host of secretaries, all meddling and
begging and fussing about, as though they were
of the highest importance.
The plain truth is that nine out of ten of
these secretaries ought to stop their futile
activities and go to work. They should get off
our backs and help to carry the load. The time
has come for each one of us to mind his own
business, and not to become a mere sheep in
anybody’s flock.
The old organizations are all in ruins—
political parties—trade unions—employers’
tederations—churches—trade associations—all
alike are mere formalities. In practically every
organization, the fires have burned out. There
is nothing left but ashes and clinkers.
