WILL-POWER IN BUSINESS Co
bottled-up energies and abilities. What can
make these energies and abilities active ?
Nothing but will-power.
There is a third of a horse-power in a glass
of water, if the water is turned into steam. And
there is a tremendous power of achievement in
a man of ordinary abilities, if he escapes from
the domination of the crowd and sets out
resolutely to shape his own career.
A German writer says that there are only
150,000 really efficient men in Great Britain.
Also, an English publisher has complained that
there are only 100,000 people in England who
make a habit of buying books. And a professor
went farther and announced that there are only
4 5,000 people in this island who ever seriously
think.
All three, in my opinion, are very far from
the truth. There are a larger number of
efficient men and readers and thinkers than the
numbers that they suggest. But they would be
nearer. the truth if they had referred to men
who have strong Purpose-wills. There are not
many in any country.

In 1928 Lord Ashfield started a keen dis-
cussion by calling attention to the scarcity of
[10,000 a year men. More than 5,000 letters
were sent to the Sunday Express about it.
