THE NEED OF NEW LEADERS

The fact is that we have about 10,000,000
men in Great Britain, and only 22,000 pay
super-tax. Only 562 have incomes of [50,000
a year. Most of these, very likely, inherited
their fortunes.
There are a few men earning £10,000 a year
and getting less. They should be paid what
they earn. There are a great many men who
think they are worth £10,000 a year, and they
are not.
A man’s salary depends on his ability to
create new profits. It does not depend on the
size of his job, as he may not be big enough
for his job. Any man is worth £10,000 a year
who creates new profits of £100,000 a year.
Suppose a firm is making £200,000 a year.
Suppose it engages a new manager. Suppose
he increases the profits to [£300,000 a year.
He is worth a salary of £10,000. If he increases
the profits to £400,000 a year, he is worth, I
should say, £25,000 a year. The higher the
profits, the higher a percentage he should
receive.
A man’s cash value does not depend upon
his knowledge, unless he is in one of the pro-
fessions. It does not depend upon his ability.
