THE NEED OF NEW LEADERS
seniority. His firm is not buying birthdays.
He must not allow his employees to have
bottled-up energies.
To put this thought more directly, there
may be a young man in your company who has
more brain-power than any of your Directors.
Have you ever thought of that ? Have you ever
made a search to find out the competent,
teachable people in your firm ? Is it not true
that you may have some uncut diamonds
lying about—human diamonds, I mean ?
Once, I gave some brain tests in a Lanca-
shire firm. One young man, who had a small
job, came out top. At that time, he was
regarded with disfavour. He was thought to
be full of mischief. But he was full of brains.
He is now in a high position and moving
upwards.
If it had not been for the brain-tests, he
would have been sacked. And the firm would
have lost its most competent young man.
So, would it not pay any Managing Director to
go on the search for brains among his
employees ?
Royce and Edison and scores of other great
Business-Builders were employees once, and
their employers let them go. Edison was
sacked by half a dozen firms.
