AMBITION PLUS WILL-POWER

Ambition without will-power leaves a man
too weak to carry out his purposes. Will-
power without ambition leaves a man merely
obstinate. The two must go together. Ambi-
tion points out the goal, and will-power is the
motor car that carries us to it.
The most practical way for any young man
to begin is to tackle some job that is near at
hand—one that is hard, but not too hard for
him to master. A young eagle does not fly
very far at first. But flies as far as it can.
It is always wise, in any line of work, to
begin where you are. If you are studying
geography, begin with your own town. If you
are not interested in the geography of the town
where you live, you will never be honestly
interested in any other geography.
If you wish to know literature, begin with
your own language. What can be more absurd
than a student of Greek and Latin who speaks
his own language in an ignorant and slovenly
way ?
If you are studying trade and commerce,
begin with your own shop or factory. Study
it. Go on a voyage of discovery to it. Explore
it, and you will find that most of it is a dark
continent.
