This rule gives every day its output. And
anyone who adopts this rule will be amazed to
find what can be done in 300 half-hours that
are set aside for creative work.
If a man wishes to become exceptional in any
way, he must often be alone. He must rescue
himself from the domination of the crowd. He
must have some time every day when he is not
being pushed about.
It is worth while noticing that Carnegie and
Rockefeller, who made enormous successes in
the world of business, deliberately ran their
firms from a distance. Carnegie lived two
hundred miles from his steel mills and
Rockefeller lived two hundred miles from
his oil-wells and refineries.
By doing this, they escaped from the deadly
clutch of the details and the routine. They
could see their business as a whole. They set
themselves free to make large plans. They
did some creative work every day.
Is it not true, too, that every great religious
leader always strengthened himself by solitude?
Did he not make himself strong in faith by
dwelling now and then in the ‘‘ silent places ’?
There must be concentration of thought in
order to strengthen the will. Every self-reliant
