Show me one man who has been spoiled by
money, and I will show you a hundred who
have been spoiled by poverty. Poverty is the
enemy of the human race. It is the enemy of
the mind and the soul as well as of the body.
Money means a better home, more comforts,
more books, more music, more travel, larger
ideas, wider sympathies, a higher quality of
character. The man who helps others to make
more money is not lowering the quality of their
lives. Not likely.
A man MusT have a money-power in order
to carry out his own plans, instead of being a
mere pawn in the chess-game of some other
man. He must have money to create his own
environment. He must have it, as Robert
Burns said, for ‘the glorious privilege of
being independent.”
The habit of saving in youth helps a man
all his life. This is, perhaps, why the children
of the rich are so often a failure in business
life—they did not learn to save.
When a boy’s father is poor, poverty compels
the boy to earn and to save. This gives him a
running start. It strengthens his will-power.
It gives him the spirit of self-help.
When a man has compelled himself to save,
