upon his own job will soon have the delusion
that he knows it ‘‘ from A to Z.” He will then
become unteachable. To prevent this, he must
go outside of his business and learn.
Too many business men are like the Grand
Lama of Tibet. They wall themselves in. They
keep to themselves and their own trade ; and
they learn nothing from outside.
Most men who climb up by their own efforts
are unteachable from outside. They hold fast
to their own little personal experience. This
makes them self-reliant. But it also keeps them
ignorant of many things that would help them.
For instance, notice how much a business
man may learn from Science, Theatres, Jour-
nalism, Colleges, Hotels, Politics and Sport.

(1) Science. From science we learn to
collect facts—to get the exact figures—to put
facts in place of opinions. Any man who has
studied books of science has learned to give
up guess-work. Also, he has learned to look
ahead—to budget ahead—to plan for next year.
Science means clearing away the notions and
errors and traditions. It means getting down
to bedrock. Science takes us out of our Fools
Paradise, where we believe what we want to
believe. It teaches us that there is nothing in
