WILL-POWER IN BUSINESS
Too many of our young men want easy,
ready-made jobs, with not much responsibility.
When they are offered jobs, they ask anxiously,
‘“ And what will I havetodo?” 'Thentheyare
surprised when they hear how small their pay
will be. They have not learned yet that no one
is paid much in the business world merely
= going through a routine and obeying
orders.
A Public Schoolboy after commendable
perseverance got an interview with a Fleet
Street Editor, and asked him for a job. ‘‘ What
can you do ? ” asked the Editor. ‘‘I can do
what I am told,” said the Public Schoolboy.
“ That’s no use to us,” said the Editor. ‘‘ The
pavement of Fleet Street is crowded with men
who can do that.”
What we want in business is a young man
who can use his head and make his job a bigger
one. We want job-builders, not salary-in-the-
slot dummies.
Hundreds of thousands of our business men
are living on ‘ Easy Street.” And they wonder
why they are making so little money. They
have settled down into an easy rut, with
cushions. They are waiting for customers.
Nothing takes less energy or intelligence than
waiting.
