We do not use little ships any more, but we
do use little factories. Many of our factories
are as small as the factories of 1670. Little
50-ton factories! Struggling bravely in the
stormy seas of trade and commerce! Trying
to compete with the great combines of America
and Germany !

What is meant by the new word ‘ Rationali-
zation > is that these small mills and factories
shall be grouped together—those of a kind.
They will stop price-cutting and tearing each
other down. They will combine their capital,
30 as to have more credit.
Each group will have a real Sales Manager.
It will have experts on methods of manufactur-
ing. It will have Directors with larger ideas. It
will puta brand name on its goods and advertise.
Each separate factory will become a specialty
factory. A small factory can hold its own if
it makes one thing and not fifty. Already this
has been done in a number of industries, but
thousands of men are still struggling along
with small separate factories that can never
make profits.

No small factory can pay unless it has a
