HISTORY: Incorporated under laws of Oregon, June 29, 1900, as the Portland Railway Light & Power Co Name changed to Portland Electric Power Co., April 26, 1924. Control was acquired by Central Public Service Co. in 1929 and present name adopted Mar. 12, 1930. Portland Electric Power Co. originally formed in 1906 as Portland Railway, Light & Power Co. Latter company purchased all property and franchises of the Portland Railway Co., Portland General Electric Co., Oregon Water, Power & Railway Co. and all the properties of the Mt. Hood Railway & Power Co. In 1914, acquired control of Willamette Valley Southern Railway (now Willamette Railway Co.). In July, 1914, control of Yamhill Electric Co., Newberg, re. In Oct. 1923, purchased light and power distribution svstem in St. Johns, regon. Portland Electric Power Co. in 1926 acquired the water distribution svstem in Vancouver, Wash,, and vicinity; light, power and water distribution properties in Hillsboro, Ore., and vicinity, and complete electric distribution system in Oswego, Ore. In 1927, purchased Mollala Electric Co. serving Aurora, Hubbard, Donald and Barlow, Ore, and adjacent territory. In 1929 acquired Seattle Lighting Co. March 12, 1930, stockholders authorized change of name to Pacific Northwest Public Service Co. and name of Seattle Lighting Co. to Seattle Gas Co. BUSINESS: Company furnishes directly or through subsidiaries, light and power in Portland and over 75 other communities in western Oregon, conducts gas business in Seattle, Wash. ,and operates city and interurban railway lines in Portland and adjacent territory. Company and its subsidiaries serve over 170,000 electric customers and 60,000 20% Susiomors located in a territory having an estimated population in excess of PROPERTY: Company has a total electric generating capacity of 183,619 h.p., of which 109,892 h.p. is located in 6 hydro-electric plants and 73,727 h.p. in 3 reserve steam stations. The transmission system embraces over 800 miles of hightension transmission lines which interconnect the hydro-electric plants and steam stations with 18 substations located at important load centers. Railway property includes 292 miles of track, of which 190 miles comprise the city railway system in Portland and 102 miles are interurban lines. Gas manufacturing plants in Seattle have a rated capacity of 12,500,000 cubic feet per day ,and distribution is effected through 919 miles of gas mains. Company also owns 9-story fireproof building in the business center of Portland, used for its offices; an amusement park near the city and considerable land on the east side of the Willamette river valuable for terminals. FRANCHISES: Company's principal electric franchises (those in Portland, Salem and Oregon City) provide no limitation in time and contain no burdensome restrictions. Interurban lines are very largely located on private right of way owned by the company. Principal city railway franchises in Portland, which expire in 1932, grant the company preferential rights to any new franchises which may then be offered by the City. Seattle Gas Company also has sufficient gas franchises covering the entire citv of Seattle.
