HISTORY: In 1912, City began construction of a line from Third and Stewart St. 
to 15th W. and Thorndyke, in Ballard, approximately 4 miles. In 1913, City 
accepted, as a gift, the Lake Burien Line, extending from Spokane Street to Lake 
Burien, approximately nine miles, half of which was outside the city limits. 
In 1918, in order to afford adequate transportation to large numbers of shipyard 
workers engaged in war construction, an elevated road was built along Railroad 
Ave. from King Street to Spokane Street, and extended on the surface to south 
industrial districts. On March 31, 1919, after ratification by the electorate, on 
previous Nov. 5, 1918, the city acquire dfrom the Puget Sound Power &amp; Light Co. 
the entire street railway system of the city, consideration being $15,000,000 in 
20-year utility bonds, bearing 59% interest, principal pavable in annual install- 
ments of $833,000, starting March 1, 1922. Principal and interest were paid regu- 
larly until 1930, when Puget Sound Power &amp; Light Co. agreed to extension of 
two vears and waived principal payments of 1930 and 1931
