bear a constant proportion to the weight of all the kinds of tyres 
exported. On this method (see para. 33) they arrive at the 
probable number of outer covers exported, by dividing the total 
weight of exports in kilogrammes by 138. They consider this pro- 
portion to give reasonably close results when applied to the total 
French tyre exports, but to require modification in considering 
sxports to particular countries. However reasonable a comparison 
this may give, similar estimates in regard to other classes of 
rubber manufactures are even more unsatisfactory. 
66. France enters into international competition in rubber manu- 
factures chiefly through the operations of one great firm—the 
Michelin Company. This Company publishes no statistics. Tike 
the other six large rubber manufacturing companies, it is inter- 
national in character. It has a factory in Italy where it holds a 
strong position in the motor tyre industry of the country. It also 
nas factories in England and the United States.
