THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM

But, in addition to and complementary to this, the
acquisition of knowledge is of the utmost importance.
The struggle for national supremacy in the near future
will be so bitter that, to prepare for it, the education of
the rising generation must be intensive. The whole
system must be put in the melting-pot, the fine metal of
useful knowledge discovered, and the dross rejected.
Only by a drastic remodelling of the school curriculum
will this object be attained.
The educated boy of 18 to 19 should have, at any rate,
some knowledge of four great matters; his soul, his mind,
his body, and the world about him.
The study of psychology, fascinating as it is, is not

novel and « Treasure Island”.
For the same reasons that psychology is unsuitable for
a school subject so is logic, and although it is still retained
as an alternative subject in the additional part of the
Previous Examinations at Cambridge it will probably
soon disappear from the syllabus. There is an outcry
at present for more logical and scientific method in
classical and literary studies, but this can be obtained
without a formal study of logic. With the development
of science in education inductive and deductive processes
