its mail subventions. The fast Italian mails for America, of course.
are sent by rail to Channel ports, so the-Italian lines to the United
States are not under mail contract. The navigation bounty of
780,000 lire is paid for 26 voyages to New York, aggregating 234,000
miles, and 34 voyages to Brazil and Argentina, aggregating 468,000
miles, in all 702,000 miles, or 21 cents per mile the round voyage.
The principal expenditures of Italy, however, are under her ocear
and Mediterranean mail contracts, a summary of which follows:

 The subsidy to the Nederland (Dutch) Steamship Company is a mall payment, pure
309 simple, to a foreign corporation for carrying the Italian mails to Batavia 26 times
year.

The 103 steamers, aggregating 258,400 gross tons, of the Navigazione
Generale Italiana comprise over a fourth of the steam tonnage of
Italy, and the mail and navigation services of the company reach
nearly every port of the world where the Italian flag is seen. The
contracts of the company with the Government fill a small volume.
Following are the routes, which involve 80 per cent of the appropriations
 to that company, the remainder being voted for short and frequent
 voyages between Italian ports:
