The British Columbia Salmon Canners’ Association—The British
Columbia Salmon Canners’ Association, with offices at 615 Pender
Street, Vancouver, British Columbia, is an association organized by
virtually all the salmon canners of British Columbia for their
mutual protection and the promotion of their interests. No buying
or selling is transacted. The members, as distinguished from the
association itself, buy tin for cans and other necessary supplies
chiefly from Great Britain and the United States, and sell their
output in England and other European countries. Scarcely any
goes to the United States..
The canned salmon handled by the members of the association
are staple products. .
Practically all the salmon canners are members of the associatior,
and control fully 90 per cent of the British Columbia output. The
members of the association handle also fully 90 per cent of the
exports of canned salmon from British Columbia.
All salmon for export is sold here for cash, after examination.
and Aoptancs by the purchasers, who ship to where they please.
I am informed that in the majority of cases the seller is ignorant
of the destination of the goods. CL
A portion of the members of the association have agents in central
and eastern Canada who handle local sales, and a few of the larger
firms maintain offices in London, Liverpool, or Glasgow, where
British and some other European business is conducted.
It is claimed that British Columbia canned salmon is superior to
any other grade, and that it commands a higher price. The principal
competition is experienced in respect to Alaska salmon. which
generally grades lower in quality and is sold at a cheaper price.
No dumping or price policy is maintained.
