APPARENT INTERRELATIONS IN THE EXPORT COAL TRADE OF THE
UNITED KINGDOM.

The following data in regard to the more prominent British coal
companies has Foon compiled in answer to the inquiries of the Commission
by an important American coal company. The information
is taken from a number of British statistical publications and from
rivate British sources open to the American company. It is printed
hero in full because much of it is thought to be of much value and not
available in like form anywhere else. The matter relating to Lord
Rhondda (D. A. Thomas) and the Cambrian Coal Combine, Cory
Bros. & Co., and the Wilson interests is of course especially pertinent
to the discussion of American and British competition in certain
foreign coal markets. (See Part I, pp. 345-352.)

The following is a list of companies in South Wales producing more
than 250,000 tons annually.
On account of the position isp J by middlemen, it is almost
impossible to say what proportion of each company’s coal is exported,
but the product of companies marked (E) is well known in export
markets.
This list accounts for approximately 44,000,000 tons out of a total
production of 57,000,000, or 77 per cent, and it is safe to assume that
the balance consists of anthracite and the very low volatile (“dry”)
coals that are used in some parts of the United Kingdom for steam
Dreduation, particularly in some of the southern cities for electric
plants.
