In the northern and Yorkshire fields, the docks are controlled to a
large extent by the North Eastern Railway, and by the Tyne Commissioners,
a municipal body. There are, however, some private
piers controlled by the larger producing companies.
(¢) Shipping.—~The amount of interrelation between coal and
iramp shipping is believed to be very large, and certain examples
may e found 1n the lists of prednsing companies, and also among the
dealers, but on account of the manner in which shipping business is
conducted it is not possible to give a definite estimate as to the
extent. The firm of Burrell & Son, of Glasgow, may be taken as a
good example of operating methods. They are managing owners for
26 cargo steamers, each one of which, for the purpose of limiting
liability in case of collisions, etc., is owned by a separate company.
An individual might easily, therefore, own shares in one or more of
these and not in the others, and except in infrequent cases, they are
private companies, issuing no reports, and giving out no information.
{f) Consumers.—Except for coal distributing plants and certain
zas and electric companies, the amount of British Go ps invested in
coal consumers in the Mediterranean is relatively small, and examples
of interlocking directorates between these and the coal business are
not frequent. There is much British capital in South America,
however, particularly in the Argentine railways, many of whose
directorates are almost entirely British; but the coal trade, although
it is believed to be interested, is not conspicuous in the directorates.
With the exception of the Rothschilds, we find no English directors
on any important French railway and none at all in Greece
Italy, Algiers, or Tunis. In Spain there are several, but no coal
men on any important line.
In the Argentine railway companies we find only the following:

Trust Co. (London). Mortgage
