Capacity is measured either in terms of bed places (that is the
number of persons who can be accommodated) or in terms of rooms
(or equivalent, such as suites, camping spaces, etc.), or both.
The figures relate generally, to the year end maximum capacity of
establishments which provide accommodation for international

NOTES ON THE STATISTICAL TABLES
L. Care should be taken when reading the statistical tables to distinjuish
between "tourist" and "visitor" (tourist and excursionist) arrivals
at frontiers:

The term "visitor" has been used when the arrival statistics include
visitors staying for more and less than twenty-four hours (tourists and
excursionists).

The term "tourist" has been applied to arrival statistics where the
definition of those travellers included in the statistics conforms, or
very nearly conforms, to the definition of a "tourist" as recommended by
the United Nations Conference on International Travel and Tourism, Rome
1963. Thus, "tourist" arrivals do not include arrivals of visitors staying
for less than twenty-four hours or not staying overnight
(excursionists).

2. Comparisons of tourist arrivals at frontiers and tourist arrivals in
accommodation establishments should take account of factors of noncoverage
and multiple registration which occur in the compilation of tourist
arrivals in accommodation. To facilitate such comparisons the class
2f "accommodation establishments" is further sub-divided into the "hotel
industry", that is hotels, motels, boarding houses and inns, "supplementary
means of accommodation”, that is youth hostels, camping sites, recreation
centres for children, holiday villages, mountain shelters, rented
villas, apartments and rooms; and health establishments, that is thermal
establishments, sanatoria and convalescent homes. Arrival statistics confined
to the hotel industry are, therefore, referred to as "hotel arrivals",
while those recorded in the hotel industry, as well as a substantial
proportion of supplementary accommodation and/or health establishments
are referred to as "accommodation arrivals",

3. Statistics of visitor and tourist arrivals to a country or at an
accommodation establishment do not take account of multiple visits by the
same visitors or tourists during a year. Therefore, arrival statistics
