IUOTO - INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL STATISTICS
—————— + ———
strictly refer to numbers of visits rather than of numbers of individual
visitors or tourists.

PAGE 8 NOTES

4. when, as is frequently the case, arrivals statistics are recorded by
country of nationality, there may be many visitors who are not residents,
permanent or otherwise, of their country of nationality. This fact should
not be neglected in considering, e.g. US nationals travelling in Europe or
Asia; Australian or South African nationals travelling in Europe; UK and
French nationals in certain parts of Africa and Asia, etc. This does not
apply however to statistics tabulated according to country of usual residence,
which is preferable for this reason.
5. Methods of calculating average length of stay of foreign tourists
differ from country to country. Some countries measure average length of
stay by sample survey among departing tourists at the frontiers, others
neasure average length of stay by making exact counts of cards given to
tourists at the time of arrival and returned at the time of departure.
Those countries which collect tourist statistics at hotels and other forms
of accommodation are obliged to calculate average length of stay of foreign
 tourists in terms of stay at individual accommodation establishments;
thus, if total foreign tourist nights in hotels are divided by total foreign
tourist arrivals in hotels, average length of stay in hotels (individually)
 is obtained.

Care should, therefore, be taken when comparing average length of
stay in a country as a whole, with average length of stay in accommodation,
because the stay in accommodation represents stay in individual establishnents
and will be shorter than average length of stay in a country, as a
whole, to the extent that tourists stay in more than one accommodation
establishment during their stay in the country. Similarly, due to differences
in the weighting, median length of stay (where indicated) is generally
different from the average (or mean) length of stay of tourists.
6. The term "Scandinavia" has been used to refer to the four countries
Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden, except where otherwise indicated.

le Except where otherwise noted, receipts from foreign tourism and
expenditures on foreign tourism exclude international fare receipts and
payments. Where available, a country or regional breakdown of the principal
generators of tourist receipts is given, as well as a breakdown of
axpenditures on foreign tourism by residents of the country. Such breakdowns
are frequently calculated on the basis of the foreign currencies
bought or exchanged by foreign tourists rather than the nationality or
country of residence of the tourists in question.
3. Rates of exchange indicated in the tables are those which have been
employed to convert totais in terms of local currency into United States’
dollars. The rate indicated is that amount of local currency which equals
US$1.00. Where changes in rates have taken place, more than one par rate
is shown for each year.

J. Only the tourist arrivals and nights from the main sources of international
tourist traffic have been recorded for each country. Up to 20
such generating countries are included in each table. More detailed
breakdowns may be available from individual National Tourist Offices, to
whom inquiries should be addressed in the first instance.
