Definition : "Tourist" : These statistics relate to "short-term overseas
visitors". "Short-term visitor arrivals refer to those visisors
 who state that they intend to stay in Australia for a
period of less than twelve months (ships and air crews are
excluded). Included under the category, but listed separazely
 are :
- U.S. troops on "Rest and Recreation leave" (this scheme
was discontinued 31 December 1971) ;
Direct transit passengers, i.e. persons passing through
Australia aboard the same ship or flight ;
Transfer passengers, i.e. proceeding overseas on another
flight without leaving special transit areas provided at
an airport for this purpose.
"Excursionist" : Refers to "Direct transit passengers".
