CHAPTER XII The One Effective Remedy Equal Opportunity for All—Privilege for None—Conclusion. It is an easy matter to criticise. No work so perfect, no individual so blameless, no religion so sacred, no institution so venerated, but the fault-finder will discover its defects. There is a Thersites in every camp. But, while the tearing down process—the wholesale indictment of an existing order is a matter of ease; it is a different thing to propose some remedy which shall be effective, and which while remedying every evil, meets the ends of justice. The remedy which we propose for existing evils fully complies with this exacting standard. This remedy is not a “new idea.” It is merely the re-statement of a proposal which has appealed to the judgment, and received the approbation, of many great thinkers who have studied these problems.
