AACHEN.
It will be seen that the prices of most articles steadily increased during
these years.
There are at Aachen several horseflesh butchers, who do a regular
trade at prices varying from 3^6?. per lb. for soup meat to 5%d. for the best
joints for roasting. Sausage costs 4\d. a lb., and “ meat pasties ” are sold in
large numbers at a halfpenny each. The horse butchers complain, however,
that their supplies are gradually decreasing, and one reason given for this is
the substitution of electric for horse power in the tramway system.
Predominant prices in Berlin being taken as 100, the index numbers for
Aachen are as follows :—Food, other than meat, 105 ; meat, 111 ; all food, 106 ;
coal, 81 ; and food and coal, 103. The index number for rent and prices
combined is 93, Berlin being 100.</div>
