and let us suppose that their is at least one other commodity — say corn — which is produced both in England and Spain. Accor- dingly to Mills general theory of value the relative values of cloth and corn in England must be determined by their comparative cost of production; and, again, the relative values of wine and corn in Spain must be determined in the same way. But if we suppose cost of carriage to be eliminated, their is no reason why the value either of wine and cloth relatively to corn, and therefore relatively to each other must be completely determined by the principle of cost of productions‘“*). Bastable, der Sidgwick zu widerlegen sucht, bestreitet die Möglichkeit, daß eine für beide Länder gemeinsame Ware exi- stieren könne, so lange man die Voraussetzungen Mills anerkenne”). Würden, wie bei Mill, zwei Waren und zwei Länder mit jeweils konstanten Kosten angenommen, SO vollziehe sich‘ eine absolute Aufteilung in der Produktion zwischen den beiden Ländern, da jedes Land trotz steigender Produktion einen bleibenden Kosten- vorsprung gegenüber dem anderen Lande behaupte. Im Falle beweglicher Kosten sei zwar die absolute Aufteilung der Produktion gestört (Bastable setzt hier offenbar bewegliche Kosten gleich Kostendifferenzierung innerhalb des Landes, die, wie Schüller®) meint, eine gleichzeitige Produktion beider Länder bis an die ihnen gemeinsame Kostengrenze hervorruft), jedoch damit das von Sidg- wick aufgestellte Kostenprinzip keineswegs gerettet, denn: „de- mand and cost of production act on each other —.increased demand raising cost“ (natürlich nur für den Fall des sinkenden Ertrages) „and increased cost reducing demand“ *). Einen wichtigen und abschließenden Beitrag zu dem von Sidgwick aufgeworfenen Einwand liefert Edgeworth, dessen Behandlung des Themas der internationalen Werte unter der ge- samten darüber erschienenen Literatur bei weitem die erste Stelle einnimmt.
