PREFACE
Tu1s book on Port Economics, written at the invitation
of the publishers in order to meet the needs of candidates
preparing for the examinations of the Institute of Transport,
is intended as an introductory textbook. It is expressly
designed as such, and for that reason deals only with
primary and fundamental principles. The student who
desires to pursue his researches will find more advanced
treatment of different phases of the subject in the following
volumes previously written by the author—
Port Administration and Operation *
Cargo Handling at Ports
and, as regards the constructional side of port work—
The Principles and Practice of Dock Engineering.
The Principles and Practice of Harbour Engineering 2
The Dock and Harbour Engineer's Reference Book.2
Literature on the subject of port operation is not very
plentiful, and is mostly to be found in detached articles
and papers.
Useful and up-to-date information from various quarters
is published in The Dock and Harbour Authority, which is
a monthly Journal devoted to port affairs throughout the
world.
The author has pleasure in calling attention to the
following additional sources of information, mainly from
the American point of view :
Ports and Terminal F acilities, and Port Development,
1 Both books published by Chapman & Hall, Ltd., London.
American Agents : John Wiley & Co., New York.
2 All these books published by Chas. Griffin & Co., Ltd., London.
American Agents: The J. B. Lippincott Co., Philadelphia.
re ished at 17-19 Harcourt Street, Marylebone, London, W.
