THE GOOD WORK OF THE BANK 49 
bank was $813. Though the bank was established 
solely for Negroes there were some white de- 
positors. In Charleston nearly 300 of the 2790 
depositors were white; at Beaufort there was no 
other bank, and the whites were permitted to 
make use of the Negro bank; in New York, 
where there were 4000 depositors, the 1000 
whites were mostly foreigners. 
The following statistics’ will serve to illustrate 
the workings of the bank:
