THE STORY OF ARTIFICIAL SILK 
ments with German and Italian competitors. 
It collaborates with other companies in 
matters of research. It is not a pugnacious 
company. It believes in a “live and let 
live” policy. It makes alliances. It creates 
good-will. There is no sign that its supremacy 
in Artificial Silk may be threatened by any 
of its competitors. 
There is now a great Viscose Combine, 
composed of Courtaulds, Glanzstoff, Snia 
Viscosa and almost all the other large com- 
panies, with the sole exception of British 
Celanese. The object is not only to stabilize 
prices, but to foster inventions and research 
and in every way to develop and strengthen 
the trade as a whole. 
The Snia Viscosa, of Italy, is the second 
largest producer of Artificial Silk in the 
world. It has many British shareholders, 
as 1,000,000 of its shares were sold in London 
at [3 per share. They were snatched up 
quickly. No prospectus was issued. The 
early birds got the worms. This company is 
now building a factory in England. 
The two leaders of the Artificial Silk trade 
in Italy are Signor Gualino and Baron
